About Dhootapapeshwar
Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd is based in Panvel, Maharashtra, and has made classical Ayurvedic medicines since the nineteenth century. It is especially associated with rasa shastra, the branch of Ayurveda devoted to preparing minerals and metals, and many of its products are prescribed by name by Ayurvedic practitioners.

What is a parpati?
Parpati are a special group of rasa shastra preparations. Purified mercury and sulphur are combined into a black compound called kajjali, melted gently and pressed into thin flakes between banana leaves, which gives the preparation its name (parpata means a thin flake). Herbal ingredients may then be added. Kutaj Parpati combines this base with kutaj (Holarrhena antidysenterica), a classical herb associated with digestion. Because parpati contain processed minerals, they are used in small doses and only under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Our guides to ras medicines and bhasma and pishti explain this group of medicines further.
How to check a genuine Dhootapapeshwar pack
- The manufacturer's name and address, and a drug manufacturing licence number
- A batch number, manufacturing date and expiry date printed (not handwritten) on the pack
- An intact seal, cap or blister, and the MRP printed on the pack
- The full composition and directions for use
If anything looks altered, smudged or missing, do not use the product. Our checklist on how to read an Ayurvedic medicine label explains each point.
