Ashokarishta is one of the most trusted classical Ayurvedic tonics for women in India. This guide explains what it is used for according to the manufacturer, how it is made, how to take it and when to see a doctor. You can buy it in our women's health and asava and arishta ranges.
What is Ashokarishta?
Ashokarishta is an arishta – a medicine made by slowly fermenting a herbal decoction with jaggery and dhataki flowers. The fermentation creates a small amount of natural alcohol that preserves the medicine (read the difference between asava and arishta). Its main herb is Ashoka bark (Saraca asoca), a tree long associated with women's health in Ayurveda.
The Dabur Ashokarishta label lists Ashoka, guda (jaggery), dhataki, musta, shunthi (dry ginger), daruharidra, utpala, amalaki, haritaki, bibhitaka, mango seed, vasa, white sandalwood and cumin.
Ashokarishta uses for women
According to Dabur, Ashokarishta:
- Supports female reproductive health
- Helps ease abdominal discomfort during periods
- Helps relieve lumbar ache, backache and general body ache
- Helps manage fatigue and general weakness
- Supports digestive comfort and appetite (through musta and shunthi)
Very heavy or irregular bleeding, bleeding between periods or after menopause, severe pain or suspected anaemia need a gynaecologist – Ashokarishta is a supportive tonic, not a treatment for these.
